Stepping Down From Leadership

Stepping Down From Leadership

There may come a time, for one reason or another, that you may need a break from leading a small group. Should that time come, please clearly communicate that first to your coach and then to the Small Group Staff team as soon as possible.

  • We would also like you to consider some things and help arrange some details before stepping down.
  • Would it be in the best interest of the group to continue under new leadership?
  • Who in your group could serve as a shepherd leader in your place?
  • What is the best timing for your exit?
  • What is the best way to communicate your exit to the group, while still casting vision for the remaining people?

Our hope is that your group would continue to meet after your transition out of leadership. This will help maintain the community that has been built. It also may give someone else an opportunity to step up into leadership and serve the body of Christ as a leader.

If you do wish to ask someone to step into leadership in your group, make sure you talk to your Small Group Coach before asking anyone to lead. There is a process they will need to go through to become a small group leader. For more info see ‘How to Find, Ask and Train New Co-Leaders’ and speak with your coach about next steps.
